John Cleese Sent Brilliant Fan Letters Back In The 80s

Lots of things were great in the 80s. Michael Jackson was releasing Billie Jean. McDonalds was unveiling its McNuggets. And John Cleese was writing excellent fan letters.

Monty Python fan Matt Hyde tweeted a snap of some correspondence he received from Cleese prior to going to see the veteran comedy troupe at the O2 in London for one of their reunion shows this week.

In response to whether or not Cleese had a fanclub, the note read:

“Dear Matthew,

I am afraid I’m much too important to write notes to people like you.

Please remember that I am very very very very very very important.

However, there is no John Cleese fan club (despite my importance) because they were all murdered in 1983 by Michael Palins’ fan club.

I enclose a photograph to remind you of my importance.

Yours sincerely,

John Cleese.”

So far, the tweeted picture has been retweeted over 4000 times,

But better still is the response he then received from Michael Palin, who followed on from Cleese’s claims.

It reads: “I’m sorry John Cleese should consider his fans as ‘murdered’ by us in 1983. I think it was a merciful release for these poor deluded victims. I am healthy, well, and have no worries about bein….”

At which point the Palin’s pen is dragged off the paper, with the concluding line ‘Signed for Michael Palin in his absence, Eric Idle’.

Shouldn’t they have been writing ‘The Meaning of Life’ or something?
