Joss Whedon And Kevin Feige On Quicksilver In Avengers and X-Men

"That’s the only character where that could happen, and it happened," said Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige of the unique scenario within superhero movies that has seen a single character (Quicksilver) appear in two separate franchises.

In 2014’s ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ Evan Peters stole the show as the lightning fast mutant, and in April’s ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ another adaptation of the character will debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson.

Speaking to Buzzfeed Feige and director Joss Whedon spoke about the scenario, with Whedon admitted he “was never thrilled” about 20th Century Fox beating Marvel to the punch. Despite their shared name and source material however, the two characters will be very different on screen.

"We knew it would be very different based on the various interpretations of the character through the comic," said Feige. "It may as well be different characters." Whereas the X-Men Quicksilver was more of a plot device to get Michael Fassbender’s Magneto out of a Pentagon prison, the Avengers version will be central to the plot.

In ‘Age of Ultron’ Taylor-Johnson’s character will start out as an imprisoned experiment of Hydra’s alongside his sister Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) who did not and can not appear in the X-Men films. The pair will later allign themselves with the android villain Ultron.

Speaking of the characters’ relationship, Olsen said: “They’re super protective of each other. In all the comic books, they’re always super close or touching or holding hands or something. So we’re trying to incorporate that so it doesn’t look a little weird. But they’re the most important things in each other’s lives.”

Taylor-Johnson meanwhile added: “He’s like, ‘Don’t talk to my sister. Don’t touch my sister. He’s kind of fatherly in that physical, aggressive kind of way. And then there are times where you see that she’s consoling him and kind of nurturing him in a motherly way. He’s quite a vulnerable person. They both are.”

'Avengers: Age of Ultron' will be released on 23 April. The full Buzzfeed interview can be read here.
