Joss Whedon: Fox Owns Marvel’s Best Female Characters

Joss Whedon has spoken out about the “intractable sexism” rife in the comic book movie industry, while also admitting that Fox actually own Marvel’s best female characters.

Whedon, who will reprise his work as the writer and director of ‘The Avengers’ for its upcoming sequel in April, made his comments to Digital Spy while on the set of ‘Age Of Ultron’ last summer.

However it should also be noted that Whedon’s remarks were made before ‘Captain Marvel’ and ‘Wonder Woman’ were greenlit by Marvel Studios and DC respectively.

In fact, Whedon declared that he wanted Marvel to immediately amend this sexist trend, while also acknowledging that 20th Century Fox owned the studio’s best female characters.

“Marvel is in a position of making a statement simply by making [a female-led] movie, which I think would be a good thing to do,” he proclaimed. However he was also adamant that it shouldn’t just be made for the sake of it, and the film itself still has to be a “good movie.”

“It has to be a good character,” he explained, “and most of the best characters in Marvel are owned by Fox, let’s face it!”

Whedon is probably making reference to the likes of Sue Storm/The Invisible Woman from ‘The Fantastic Four’ as well as ‘X-Men’s’ plethora of feministas, which includes Jean Grey, Rogue, Storm, Emma Frost and the Scarlet Witch.

Joss Whedon has tried to buck this repugnant trend himself. Not only did he delightfully incorporate Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow into ‘The Avengers’, but Elizabeth Olsen will be portraying the Scarlet Witch in its impending sequel too.

However, it’s clear to see that simply isn’t enough. And Whedon continued by lambasting Hollywood’s innate sexism that is still prevalent.

“It’s a phenomenon in the industry that we call ‘stupid people.’ There is genuine, recalcitrant, intractable sexism, and old-fashioned quiet misogyny that goes on,” he proclaimed.

Whedon continued, “You hear, ‘Oh, [female superheroes] don’t work because of these two bad ones that were made eight years ago,’ there’s always an excuse.”

Fingers crossed that ‘Captain Marvel’ and ‘Wonder Woman’ helped to immediately alter this grossly ludicrous assumption.

Sadly, if they do tank, it will once again give studios the option to take the easy way out and proclaim that female-led superhero films aren’t sustainable enough to be produced. When they should, instead, be questioning their own approaches and mentality towards them.

‘Wonder Woman’ will be released in June 2017, ‘Captain Marvel’ in July 2018, while ‘Avengers: Age Of Ultron’ will hit UK cinemas on 24 April, 2015.
