Joss Whedon Talks Vision’s Origin, Insists ‘Age Of Ultron’ Is ‘Bigger’

Joss Whedon has been talking up ‘Avengers: Age Of Ultron’, and he’s confirmed that it will “bigger” in almost every fashion than its predecessor.

Whedon, who also wrote and directed 2012’s ‘The Avengers’, made the remarks during his discussion with Slash Film after the website visited the set of the film.

“The cast is bigger. The scope is bigger. We have more to work with,” Whedon confidently declared. “Not that we’re trying to spend more. In fact, we’re trying to avoid bloat wherever possible. But with this, we’re on a broader canvas. We’re in more countries. We have a bigger world to work with, and a bigger world for them just to be in.”

Whedon also gave an indication about what might be in store for the superhero team, suggesting that the world might not be quite as fond of them as they previously were and that their relationship with the average Joe has become strained.

“Once they exist as a team, we have to deal with what everybody thinks about that, and what that means to the world. So it’s not as simple as it was.”

Meanwhile the affable filmmaker explained where the Vision, who is played by Paul Bettany, comes from. In fact he confirmed that the character’s origin is just like it is in the comics, stating that Ultron created him. Whedon also hinted that he was inspired to return to the franchise just because of his excitement over the inclusion of these characters.

“Before I took the first job, I said, ‘Well, I don’t know if I’m right for this or if I want it or you want me.’ But in the second one the villains has to be Ultron, and he has to create the Vision, and then, that has to be Bettany.”

It all seems like the usual sort of comments you would expect from the director of a blockbuster sequel. Of course he is going to confirm that the follow-up is “bigger” than the original. It would be idiotic of him not to.

However his comments regarding the Vision certainly give hope that, despite his omission from the original trailer, the character will feature prominently. It will just be interesting to see where Whedon finds the space to squeeze him in.

‘Avengers: Age Of Ultron’ will be released on May 1, 2015.
