Jude Law Reveals Why he Turned Down Superman

Although Jude Law got as far as trying on Superman’s costume, he eventually turned down the role… and now he explains why.

Over the years, we’ve seen many different faces don the infamous red and blue costume… and an even greater number who never quite made it. Amongst them are the likes of Nicolas Cage and Josh Hartnett. And even Jude Law. Considering the title role in the Brett Ratner Superman movie, Jude even got as far as trying on the costume.

But now he recounts the story of why he passed on the iconic comic book role.

During an interview with MTV News, the 42-year-old actor explained why he walked away from one of the biggest superhero roles in history.

“I didn’t want to spend the rest of my life being that guy who played Superman,” he explained. “If you ever get caught smoking [a cigarette] and you’re Superman then you ruin the lives of all the children around the world.”

Of course, with great power comes great responsibility… and I can certainly understand his trepidation. After all, Superman is more than just a role – he’s a role model. And perhaps it’s for the best that Jude Law just carried on being Jude Law.

But still, it seems he was curious about the role. And after agreeing to look at the costume, it seems he decided to try it on.

“I go in the bathroom, put it on and look in the mirror, and suddenly, I am Superman,” he said. “And it is an amazing costume. My chest pops up and the music comes on… That was it. I got it out of my system. I took it off, put it in the bag, and was like, ‘I’m not going to do it.’ I saw myself. No need for the rest of the world to see me.”

Unfortunately, no photos were taken, and so the only person to see Jude Law as Superman is Jude Law himself. And of the course, the movie never ended up happening anyway, and was eventually rolled into what would become ‘Superman Returns’.

Still, he had to look better than Nicolas Cage. Right?
