Jurassic World Director Defends New Hybrid Dinosaur

'Jurassic World' director Colin Trevorrow has defended the presence of a brand new man-made dinosaur in the upcoming blockbuster - and suggests things might get a bit on the crazy side.

Since the first ‘Jurassic World’ trailer came online this week, there have been grumbles from those who would have preferred the film’s main antagonist to be an existing (or should that be pre-existing?) dinosaur, rather than one specifically made up for the film.

However, Trevorrow argues that this idea is a logical extension of the original ‘Jurassic Park’ concept; and let’s not forget, these are all technically artificial dinosaurs in the first place…

Speaking to Empire, the director concedes, “There is no shortage of awesome [real] dinosaurs. We could have populated this entire story with new species that haven’t been in any of these movies. But this new creation is what gave me a reason to tell another Jurassic Park story.

"We have the most awe-inspiring creatures to ever walk the Earth right in front of us, but for some reason that’s not enough. We’re always hungry for the next thing, and those who profit from it are always looking to feed that hunger.

"The focus groups want something bigger than a T-Rex. And that’s what they get.”

Speaking of big - one of the most eye-catching moments in the trailer is of course the gargantuan mosasaurus, popping up out of the water to devour a comparatively miniscule great white shark.

Naturally, the significance of the shark - considering Trevorrow is following on from Steven Spielberg, who of course made his name with ‘Jaws’ - is not lost on the director, who recalls pitching the idea to Spielberg (executive producer on the sequel):

“I thought it would be cool if we had this massive animal and the park used one of our most fearsome modern predators as food. There could be a whole other facility where they used shark DNA to mass-produce them to feed the bigger beast.

"Steven gave me this look like, ‘You know I get it, right?’ And I sunk a little lower in my chair. And then he said, ‘Let’s do it’.

"It’s a bonkers idea, but I’m comfortable going to Crazytown, because I used to live there when I was a kid. Children have a creative fearlessness that I envy. If you’ve seen my first movie [‘Safety Not Guaranteed’], you can see that I don’t mind embarrassing myself sometimes.”

Of course, anyone who’s followed the development of the fourth ‘Jurassic Park’ movie knows that any use of the term ‘crazy’ is relative. Notoriously, a script written by John Sayles in the late 2000s featured dino-human hybrids used as super-soldiers, fighting alongside a hard-boiled hero.

Seeing the already legendary moment of Chris Pratt riding a motorcycle in the midst of a herd of speeding velociraptors, we might wonder if some remnants of that humans fighting side-by-side with dinosaurs idea have survived in ‘Jurassic World’ - but Trevorrow implies things aren’t quite that simple.

"Owen’s relationship with the raptors is complicated. They aren’t friends. These animals are nasty and dangerous and they’ll bite your head off if you make the wrong move.

"But there are men and women out there today who have forged tenuous connections with dangerous predators. That’s interesting territory to me."
