Richard Attenborough: Jurassic World Director's Amazing On-Set Tribute

Even though Richard Attenborough sadly passed away on Sunday it seems ‘Jurassic World’, the fourth film in the dino-franchise, was already set to honour the actor who played impresario John Hammond in 1993’s ‘Jurassic Park’.

Director Colin Trevorrow paid tribute to the departed star by tweeting an image of a bronze John Hammond statue, presumably from behind-the-scenes of ‘World’, with the message “In Memoriam”.

The film, which is due out next summer, sees Hammond’s dream of a fully-functioning Jurassic Park brought to life, and this image seems to be from the visitor centre. The statue is a bold tribute to the man who promised “living biological attractions so astounding that they’ll capture the imagination of the entire planet”, and it even features the character’s trademark amber-topped cane.

Attenborough is fondly remembered for playing John Hammond in two ‘Jurassic Park’ films, but director Steven Spielberg had to fight hard to lure the star back to acting after a 14-year hiatus in front of the camera. Spielberg had wanted to cast Attenborough as Tootles in ‘Hook’, but he was too busy directing, so when it came to ‘Jurassic Park’ he delayed principal photography on the film to allow Attenborough time to finish work on ‘Chaplin’.

Legend has it Spielberg had been so keen to cast Attenborough because he wanted to say thank you to the veteran film-maker for being so supportive of ‘E.T.’ even though Attenborough’s ‘Gandhi’ was also competing for Oscars at the 1982 Academy Awards. ‘Gandhi’ was victorious on the night, taking home gongs for Best Director and Best Picture.

When a hurricane hit the set of ‘Jurassic Park’, all the cast and crew were moved to the hotel ballroom for safety, but Attenborough slept through the whole ordeal. When quizzed on how he was not alerted to the natural disaster he simply replied: “My dear boy, I survived the Blitz!”

Pure class.

‘Jurassic World’ is coming to cinemas Summer 2015.
