Jurassic World Predicted To Be Bigger Than Jurassic Park

Details of the home entertainment release for ‘Jurassic World’, as well as tie-in products and predictions for its success have been leaked in a recent memo, according to a new report on fansite Jurassic World Universe

In an alleged Toys ‘R’ Us email, a number of bullet points seemed to document the marketing strategies and plans for Colin Trevorrow’s upcoming instalment in the ‘Jurassic Park’ franchise.

A home release (presumably DVD, Blu-ray, and VOD) has been pencilled for 10 November 2015. The cinema date has been confirmed for a while, which is 12 June 2015 in the UK.

However, aside from the cool news of a LEGO video game and officially licensed building block sets, one particularly interesting bullet point reads, ‘Jurassic World is expected to be bigger than the original’. Okay, well sure, inflation will instantly see the worldwide profits increase significantly, but there’s no other backing-up of this bold assumption.

9 Amazing Things Learned From The Set Of ‘Jurassic World’

Could ‘Jurassic Park’ Happen In Real Life?

Having grossed over $1 billion in its lifetime, ‘Jurassic Park’ made almost $350 million in 1993. Even today, if a film takes that it’s considered a success. ‘JP’, for all its visual splendor, cost a mere $63 million to make. ‘Jurassic World’ has an estimated budget of around $150 million, so there’s already a hill to climb if it wishes to win in popularity and topple its predecessor in the profit stakes.

Spielberg’s dino epic was everywhere during the summer of ‘93, and you couldn’t move for tie-ins and merchandise at every turn. From figures, to stickers, to collector cards, to McDonald’s cups, to dinosaur models, to backpacks — ‘Jurassic Park’ fever hit, but nowadays you don’t tend to see the same drive or promo-smothering. Sure, there’s going to be heavy promotion — as the memo notes several crossovers, such as mobile phone apps and advertising during the Super Bowl — but will it be as well-received as the original?

Casting-wise, it’s looking strong. Chris Pratt, fresh off the success of both ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ and ‘The LEGO Movie’, is a popular choice, as he’s effectively transformed himself into 2014’s hottest leading man. Judy Greer, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Jake Johnson make up the more known names in support, but it’s not quite the ensemble of Sam Neil, Jeff Goldblum, (the late) Richard Attenborough, Laura Dern, Sam L Jackson, and Wayne Knight, is it.

No doubt ‘Jurassic World’ will be huge, though. It’s already getting a lot of attention, and the buzz around it is enough to suggest people will go and see it. However, it’s not likely to be as groundbreaking as the first, let’s be honest, so whether it’ll be as successful largely relies on how it is marketed and, most importantly, whether it’s actually any good.

Pratt is surely a name that’ll entice people into cinemas, but ultimately, it will be appreciated by those who, as younger versions of themselves, sat in a 1993 multiplex and experienced one of those rare, jaw-dropping cinema events that stay in your memory forever.

'Jurassic World' is released in UK and US cinemas on 12 June 2015.
