Kevin Smith Reveals His Dream Superhero Project

As a bona-fide comic book aficionado, it’s a tad surprising that Kevin Smith has never actually overseen a cinematic adaptation from the medium.

That doesn’t mean that he has never tried though. In fact over the years Kevin Smith has written scripts for both ‘Superman’ and ‘The Green Hornet’ that were ultimately never made, while he’s also written extensively for comics and magazines. But it turns out that there was superhero entity that Smith really wants to get his hands on: The Question.

The ‘Chasing Amy’, ‘Dogma’ and ‘Zack and Miri Make A Porno’ filmmaker made this admission while speaking to KPCC’s John Horn at LA’s Produced By conference, via Comic Book Movie.

However Smith admits that he almost certainly not ever going to get the opportunity to make his version of ‘The Question’, but if he did he’d put a “noir-ish thriller” spin on the DC comic.

‘The Question’s’ protagonist, Vic Sage, uses a special substance to erase all of his facial features, as well as a gas to change the colour of his hair and clothes. And Smith believes that his unique appearance would help to make a truly terrifying movie.

“I always thought if you were in an alley and f****** Batman showed up you’d be like, ‘Oh f***, Batman.’ But if a dude shows up with no features and starts punching you, you would probably kill yourself in fear,” he remarked.

And that’s a pretty reasonable assumption. Since his first appearance in a 1967 comic, The Question has only really featured in the comic book medium. He did previously appear in the ‘Justice League Unlimited’ cartoon, but a cinematic adaptation is hugely unlikely considering his cult status.

However, the success of ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’ and the continued domination of the superhero genre at the box office means that a movie outing wouldn’t be the most surprising decision. And with Smith’s obvious devotion to the genre and prominent skills as a screenwriter, he would be a worthy choice to helm such an adaptation. It’s still almost certainly not going to happen though.
