Kevin Spacey: Making Films Is Too Frustrating

After nearly 10 years of being artistic director at London’s Old Vic, Kevin Spacey is not looking to jump back into his film career head first, explaining to Yahoo that he feels the medium doesn’t pose a challenge any more.

“Film is great, but film has solidified,” says Spacey in our interview above, “It never will change. No matter how good you might be in a movie, you’ll never be any better. And that is unbelievably frustrating.”

Spacey took up his post at the Old Vic in September 2004 following a run of Hollywood hits that brought two Academy Awards for his performances in ’The Usual Suspects’ and ‘American Beauty’.

His tenure at one of the capital’s oldest theatres has left the formerly run-down establishment as a genuine player on the world stage, and his last performance in the one-man show ‘Clarence Darrow’ has been met with critical acclaim.

The star has slowed down his film roles in recent years, with his last big-screen appearance coming in 2011’s ‘Horrible Bosses’.

Earlier this year, he told The Hollywood Reporter he wouldn’t return to film unless it was for something big.

"Unless it’s Martin Scorsese, and it’s a really significant role, f—- off," he said. "I’m not playing someone’s brother. I’m not playing the station manager. I’m not playing the FCC chairman.”

But, when we quizzed on the quote, Spacey says it was taken out of context. “I was making a joke, first of all, and when you make a joke and it’s printed the humour gets sucked out of the sentence.” he says.

“I was basically saying that I don’t want to do anything that I don’t feel really passionate about or that I’m going to have a really remarkable time doing, or that it’s brand new and I’ve never done it before. That’s my criteria.

“But I would definitely answer Martin Scorsese’s call if he called.”

‘Horrible Bosses 2’ recently wrapped and is coming out later this year.

‘Now: In The Wings On A World Stage”, a documentary charting the actor’s acclaimed staging of ‘Richard III’, hits cinemas later today.

Kevin Spacey will take part in a live satellite Q&A tonight, which will be beamed into cinemas across the country after select screenings. The film will be available to download from www.nowthefilm.com on 10 June.
