‘Cinderella’ star Lily James has been accused of racism by fans, after a post on her Instagram account appeared to be mocking Japanese pronunciation.

26-year-old James posted a picture of herself on the red carpet at the Disney movie’s premiere in Tokyo, and while her dress was likely supposed to be the focus, it was the comment beside which drew all the attention.

“'Shinderera’ premiere in Tokyo. The final stop on our tour and it was a beautiful cold night, thank you!”, she wrote.

Some fans took the 'Shinderera’ remark as mockery.

“Tacky racist stereotype comment is pretty gross,” commented one follower.

Another added: “Not sure if that’s a racist comment or it’s the real name there.”

“Sounds more like a joke that backfired to me,” said another.

But other followers of the 'Downton Abbey’ star, who landed the title role in Kenneth Branagh’s live-action remake of the Disney classic, defended her.

“This isn’t racist you idiots. It’s the romanised spelling of Cinderella in Japanese. Educate yourselves before you accuse people of 'racism’!” said one.

Another message sent from her official page also attempted to clarify the situation, offering the literal translation: “CinderellaシンデレラShinderera Xx.”
