Our first look at Luke Evans as Scrooge in A Christmas Carol is here, as Netflix has released a trailer for the Christmas film.

A fresh take on the Charles Dickens novel, the Netflix film is an animated musical boasting a stellar cast. Alongside Evans as Ebenezer Scrooge, Jessie Buckley will play Isabel Fezziwig, Olivia Colman is the voice of the Ghost of Christmas Past, and Jonathan Pryce plays Jacob Marley.

Johnny Flynn is Bob Cratchit, James Cosmo is Mr Fezziwig, Fra Fee is Harry Huffman, and Trevor Dion Nicholas is the Ghost of Christmas Present.

Netflix describes the film as “Dickens’ ageless legend [...] reborn in this supernatural, time-travelling, musical adaptation of the definitive Christmas story”.

Sharing the trailer on Twitter, Evans said: “To play a Charles Dickens’ character is a special honour.

“But to play the miser of all misers, Ebenezer Scrooge, was the best Christmas present I could ever wish for!”

Meanwhile, cast member Fra Fee said: “Who in the world could resist it? Been really working on my dancing for this one.”

Director Stephen Donnelly told Digital Spy: “It’s been a fascinating challenge to adapt such a beloved and often-told story. I think this version will give those who know A Christmas Carol all the things they expect but not as they’ve experienced them before.

“There are more than enough psychedelic, time-travelling and musical surprises to keep those familiar with the story on the edge of their seats, while the authentic essence of Dickens has been retained for those coming completely fresh to the classic tale.”

He added: “I can’t wait to share this new version of A Christmas Carol with the world and sincerely hope audiences embrace it this year and for many to come.”

Scrooge: A Christmas Carol, will be released on Netflix on December
