The British star’s response to a question about the film’s feminist stance, which happened during the film’s press conference at Cannes a few weeks back, has gone viral.

Film critic Peter Howell asked Hardy if while reading the script, he thought Mad Max “was supposed to be a man’s movie.”

“No,” Hardy said. “Not for one minute. It’s kind of obvious.”

The image has now been shared thousands of times on Twitter and Howell has since issued a statement saying his question has been misunderstood and taken out of context.

“My question to Tom Hardy was intended as the opposite of sexism,” he told Buzzfeed, “I was congratulating him for his willingness to share the screen with so many strong women in a franchise and genre more inclined to celebrate the male over the female.”

“But I don’t think I worded my question very well. Hardy just shrugged it off, although I don’t think he was offended by it.”
