Martin Freeman Joins Captain America: Civil War

Just when you thought that the cast of ‘Captain America: Civil War’ couldn’t get any bigger Marvel Studios have announced that Martin Freeman has joined the ensemble.

Marvel haven’t revealed who Freeman will be playing in their Cinematic Universe but they wasted no time in waxing lyrical about the thespian’s ability.

Kevin Feige declared in a statement, “From his roles as Bilbo Baggins and Doctor Watson to Tim in ‘The Office’, Martin’s range from the dramatic to the comedic has consistently impressed us.”

Marvel’s head-honcho continued, “We couldn’t be more honoured or excited to have such a talented actor join the Marvel Cinematic Universe.”

Freeman has developed into one of the most distinguished character actors of the modern era thanks to his portrayals in ‘Sherlock’, ‘The Office’, and ‘Fargo’, while he’s also proven that he has the mettle to lead a humungous franchise, as he portrayed Bilbo Baggins in ‘The Hobbit’s’ three films.

The big question now is who is Martin Freeman going to portray in Captain America: Civil War? Even though there is one big Spidey-shaped hole in ‘Civil War’s’ ensemble that still needs filling it’s quite a stretch to imagine Freeman in the role, especially since Marvel have insisted their Peter Parker will be a teenager in their reboot.

What’s more likely is that, rather than playing a superhero, Freeman will be portraying a bureaucrat who oversees the development of the Superhero Registration Act that leads to Iron Man and Captain America quarrelling.

Freeman’s addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe re-teams the actor with his ‘Sherlock’ co-star Benedict Cumberbatch, who has been cast as ‘Doctor Strange’. Unfortunately, it’s unlikely that the pair will share the same screen in these projects though, even though Marvel should go above and beyond to make that happen.

‘Captain America: Civil War’ is due out on May 6, 2016, while ‘Doctor Strange’ will hit screens on July 8, 2016.
