Marvel Boss On the Challenge Of 'Living Up To' Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 2

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has been discussing plans for Tom Holland’s tenure as Spider-Man and commented on the pressure of living up to Sam Raimi’s ‘Spider-Man 2’.

Speaking to Superhero Hype, Feige said the current focus is on the first solo movie in 2017, and not the web-slinger’s upcoming cameo in 'Captain America: Civil War’.

“Right now, it’s all about producing the new stand-alone Spider-Man movie,” Feige said. “That’s what Sony is focused on.

"That’s what we’re focused on, and whatever happened before that or after that, sort of remains to be seen, but it’s all about producing the best Spider-Man movie we can, certainly within the Sony Universe.”

Feige was also asked about how the new film will compare to the previous films, Raimi’s trilogy starring Tobey Maguire and Marc Webb’s two disappointing 'Amazing Spider-Man’ reboots.

“We’re going to have it be its own thing but some of those Spider-Man films… I think 'Spider-Man 2’ is one of the best superhero movies ever, so that’s a lot to live up to.”

He’s not wrong. In the midst of the superhero movie golden age we’re in it’s easy to forget the great movies of the early 2000s like 'Spider-Man 2’, which still holds up today.

In February, Sony Pictures (who still hold the big screen rights to the character) announced a deal had been struck with Marvel Studios to bring the iconic hero into the same universe as Robert Downey Jr’s Iron Man and Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk.

The first new 'Spider-Man’ movie is set for release on 28 July 2017.
