Marvel Casts Krysten Ritter In Jessica Jones TV Show

Actress Krysten Ritter, best known for her roles in ‘Breaking Bad’ and ‘Don’t Trust The B***h in Apartment 23,’ has reportedly been cast in the title role of Marvel’s upcoming Netflix series ‘Jessica Jones.’

This has not yet been officially confirmed by Marvel themselves, but Deadline say it’s in the bag, with Ritter emerging victorious over such other contenders as Alexandra Daddario, Teresa Palmer and Jessica DeGouw.

Deadline also appear to have revealed Marvel’s choice for the role of Luke Cage - ‘The Following’ and ‘Halo: Nightfall’ actor Mike Colter, with whom Ritter and Palmer reportedly had “chemistry reads” as part of their audtion process. This adds weight to earlier reports that Luke Cage will appear in some episodes of ‘Jessica Jones’ before headlining his own Netflix series.

Set to follow Marvel’s in-production ‘Daredevil’ series direct to Netflix, ‘Jessica Jones’ and ‘Luke Cage’ will then be followed by ‘Iron Fist,’ after which all four of these comparatively small-scale, ‘street-level’ superheroes will team up in mini-series ‘The Defenders.’

Comic fans will also be aware that Jones and Cage wind up getting married, so chemistry between Ritter and Colter was naturally a consideration. (But again, that’s assuming these casting reports are on the level.)

A creation of John Romita Sr. and Archie Goodwin, Luke Cage is an ex-con who is given superhuman strength and bullet-proof skin via Captain America-esque ‘super soldier’ experimentation. Introduced in 1972 to cash in on the ‘Blaxploitation’ boom, he featured in two solo comics, ‘Luke Cage: Hero for Hire’ and ‘Luke Cage: Power Man,’ but is perhaps best known for teaming up with Iron Fist in ‘Heroes For Hire.’

Jessica Jones, meanwhile, is a far more recent Marvel creation, introduced in 2001 in the Brian Michael Bendis/Michael Gaydos title ‘Alias’ (no relation to the TV show of the same name) under the mature readers-oriented Marvel MAX imprint. After trying her hand at being a superheroine, Jones finds her true calling as a private detective typically handling superhero-related cases.

Both shows are expected to come to Netflix in 2015.
