Marvel DID Try To Get Spider-Man In Captain America: Civil War

The Sony hackers have revealed that Marvel Studios did attempt to work a deal that would have seen Spider-Man introduced into their cinematic universe.

Sony - who own the big screen rights to Spidey - shut down the talks, which would have seen a trilogy of Spider-Man films produced by Marvel but with Sony retaining control of creative, marketing and distribution.

An email between Sony Pictures chief Amy Pascal and a business partner (via The Wall Street Journal), Pascal says that Marvel wanted to include Spider-Man in upcoming film ‘Captain America: Civil War’.

In the comic book story which Anthony and Joe Russo’s film will adapt, Spider-Man is the hero caught between the warring ideologies of Cap and Iron Man. With Spidey out of the picture it appears Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther will assume that role in the story.

The talks were of huge importance to both sides, so important that Disney CEO Bob Iger and Sony CEO Kaz Hirai were the ones attempting to strike a deal.

As for the Marvel-free future of Spider-Man, that will be decided at a summit in January where they hope to rejuvenate the franchise following a disappointing ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ sequel and the departure of producer/writer Robert Orci earlier this year.

Among the ideas to be discussed in January are the ‘Sinister Six’ and ‘Venom’ spin-offs that had been announced but are now in a state of ambiguity. The rumoured female-led team-up spin-off and an animated Spidey comedy produced by Phil Lord and Chris Miller of The Lego Movie.

'Captain America: Civil War' will star Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr, Boseman, Daniel Bruhl, Frank Grillo, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan & Scarlett Johansson.

The film will be relesed on April 29, 2016.
