Marvel Have Given Robert Downey Jr The Big Avengers ‘A’

Actors taking mementos from famous film sets is nothing new, but typically they’re small trinkets and props not say, an enormous letter A.

Never one to do anything by half measures,  Downey Jr asked for and received the massive ‘A’ which adorned his character Tony Stark’s New York skyscraper in ‘Avengers Assemble’ and was left standing following the film’s climatic battle.

Speaking to BBC Radio 1 (via Mirror) Downey said: “On the last Avengers, there’s this scene where there’s this ‘A’ which is probably 30 feet tall and I’m looking at it, and we’re shooting in England, and I go, ‘I need that in my office in Venice.’

"About two weeks ago, a wheeler showed up,” he continues. “I’m like, ‘What the heck is this doing here?!’ And they go, ‘This is the ‘A’ you asked for.’ And I go, ‘They brought it?!’ So now we have a massive Avengers ‘A’ that will be prominently placed.

It was revealed last week that the 49-year-old would be facing off with Chris Evans’ Captain America in ‘Captain America 3’, which will adapt Marvel’s famous Civil War storyline. Perhaps the A was part of a gesture of goodwill on the studio’s part?

Downey’s deal to be in ‘Cap 3’ extends his current Marvel contract by at least one film, with a role in ‘Avengers 3’ part of the older contract he renewed following ‘Iron Man 3’.

Ben Affleck, arguably the second biggest actor currently playing a major superhero (albeit in a film we’ve not yet seen), recently revealed the cost of his Batman costume. Asking if he could take the suit home at the end of filming he was told “For $100,000 you can”. Affleck was understandably put off.

Downey Jr will next appear as Iron Man in next year’s ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’, which will be released on April 24.
