Marvel Producer Wants Solo Female Superhero Movie 'Today'

It’s safe to say there are quite a few comic book movies in the pipeline at the moment. Thirty four known properties and scheduled release dates in the pipeline following last week’s mammoth announcement from Warner Bros.

If Hollywood wants to stave off over-saturation then one of the ways that can be achieved is through variety and diversity, and the obvious way for that to happen is to make superhero movies about people other than white dudes.

For example: women, that group that makes up 50% of human population but just a tiny proportion of existing superhero leads. It’s time for another super-heroine to take centre stage and has been for some time, but it will be another three years until Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman gets a film in 2017.

That’s Warner Bros and DC represented in some way, but what about Marvel? The whole of Hollywood is chasing Marvel’s model, but in terms of diversity they’re now falling behind.

Asked by Variety when Marvel’s female-led superhero will be arriving, Marvel’s executive producer and exec VP of visual effects & post-production Victoria Alonso said: “If it were up to me, it would be today.”

Marvel’s biggest, established female character is currently Scarlet Johansson’s Black Widow – the likeliest candidate to get her own film. That said, for some time rumours have said that Carol Danvers, aka Ms Marvel, will be getting her own film soon enough.

They shouldn’t be, but eventually the big studios will be forced to diversify their superhero line-ups for the sake of the wider cinema-going public’s sanity.

The sooner the better.
