Marvel’s Civil War: Who Will Side With Captain America & Iron Man?

Last week, as production began on ‘Captain Amercia: Civil War’, Marvel revealed the film’s full cast of established faces from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

And it is one hell of a cast, boasting ten superheroes who will be caught up in the ideological and eventually physical battle between Captain America (Chris Evans) and Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr).

On which side of the battle lines will the like of Black Widow, Hawkeye, Ant-Man and Vision fall however? Let’s speculate…

Warning: Spoilers for 'Avengers: Age of Ultron’ follow…

'Civil War’s synopsis says it all begins with Cap leading the new Avengers line-up on a mission that goes awry, leading to a mounting political pressure for the government to implement a law that would mean powered individuals must register their true identities with US authorities.

That new Avengers line-up - as seen at the end of Joss Whedon’s sequel - is Cap, Black Widow (Scarlet Johansson), Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), The Vision (Paul Bettany), War Machine (Don Cheadle) and Falcon (Anthony Mackie). All of whom will return for 'Civil War’.

Joining them will also be Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) and returning Avenger Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner).

Of those we can assume that War Machine will side with his friend Tony Stark (who is for the proposed legislation) and Falcon will side with his friend Steve Rogers (who opposes it). Those two are easy to place, but what about the rest?

In 'Age of Ultron’ we find out Hawkeye has a family who Nick Fury helped keep safe and secret. Knowing that it’s obvious he would be against the principal of having to reveal his identity. So he would side with Cap.

Scott Lang (Ant-Man) too has a daughter he would want to keep safe, so he would side with Cap as well.

Widow meanwhile has led a life dominated by secrets. She keeps herself to herself so would naturally side with Cap, but she may also have had enough of a damage being done by such secrets and side against him. A riff between her and her friends Cap and Hawkeye would also create some nice tension.

I would be inclined to think she sides with Cap however.

On the other side of things Vision siding with his creator would make sense. He’s a strange character to pin down so it’s hard to tell which side of the debate he would fall on, but he’s an android so might see the cold logic in heroes revealing their identities to become accountable. He also has no secret identity to reveal so might not understand why it is such a big deal.

Scarlet Witch lost her brother Quicksilver in 'Age of Ultron’ so knows the repercussions of the Avengers and their avenging. Knowing that human cost personally would make her want accountability for others whose siblings might die. Her and Vision being on the same side would also allow their relationship (established well in the comics) to be explored further.

The tenth hero is Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) the new superhero being introduced in the film. His character will be caught between the warring sides, fulfilling the role Spider-Man had in the original comics.

Speaking a Spidey a role of some kind is expected in 'Civil War’ but probably little more than a cameo in a credits scene and/or a reference. A nod to masked heroes like Spidey and Daredevil running around New York could be used to frame the debate.

So here’s our list of the teams.

Team Captain America: Black Widow, Hawkeye, Ant-Man & Falcon.

Team Iron Man: The Vision, War Machine & Scarlet Witch.

Of course this is purely speculative, but theorising about Marvel’s films is half he fun for big ol’ geeks like us. Who do you think will side with who? Do you see a different line-up? Let us know in the comments below.
