Marvel’s Shortlist For The New Spider-Man Revealed?

Reports are coming in all over that Marvel have worked their candidates to take over as the new ‘Spider-Man’ down to five actors - and The Wrap claims to know who these five actors are.

Now, before we get too carried away here, let’s not forget it wasn’t so long ago that a similar shortlist was released online naming potential candidates for the title role in ‘Doctor Strange’ - a list on which Benedict Cumberbatch, who ultimately won the role, was notable by his absence.

Even so, it’s entirely possible that one of the following five young actors may be set to pick up the mantle from Andrew Garfield and carry the red and blue suit into the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the first time.

Curiously, the two actors most commonly mentioned as being top contenders - Logan Lerman and Dylan O’Brien - are not named at all. But true to early word, Marvel and Sony are aiming at a younger age range than before, with almost all the candidates still in their teens.

And the reported contenders are...

Asa Butterfield

Recently turned 18, this London-born actor is perhaps the biggest name of the bunch, famed for his roles in ‘Hugo’ and ‘Ender’s Game.’

Nat Wolff

The eldest contender at age 20, the LA actor recently came to prominence in ‘The Fault in our Stars’ - in which he co-starred with Shailene Woodley, the almost-Mary Jane of ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2′ (she shot scenes in the role which wound up on the cutting room floor).

Tom Holland

Another British actor from Kingston Upon Thames (not to be confused with the rather older Tom Hollander), the 19 year old is best known for ‘The Impossible’ and ‘How I Live Now.’

Timothee Chalamet

Young American actor, who played Matthew McConaughey’s 15-year old son in ‘Interstellar.’

Liam James

After early roles in ‘Aliens Vs Predator: Requiem’ and ‘2012,’ the 19 year old Canadian actor more recently appeared in ‘The Way Way Back.’

So those are the names The Wrap mention - though we should emphasise the report does say these young actors ‘among others’ are up for the role, so there may be others we don’t know about - and Lerman and O’Brien might not be out of the race just yet.

It was also emphasised that neither Marvel nor Sony made any comment regarding these alleged candidates for the role, but “multiple individuals with knowledge of the situation have confirmed they are strong contenders.”

Regardless, we can expect Marvel to make their decision sooner rather than later, as the new Spider-Man is set to make his debut in next year’s ‘Captain America: Civil War,’ expected to start production soon.

After that, the lucky young actor will headline 2017′s as-yet untitled ‘Spider-Man’ reboot to be co-produced by Marvel’s Kevin Feige and Sony’s Amy Pascal - for which Drew Goddard (’The Cabin in the Woods’) is rumoured to be the writer and director.

Meanwhile, a rumoured post-credits cameo from Spidey on ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ has been debunked as false.
