Marvel’s Spider-Man Reboot Will NOT Be Another Origin Story

Comic book movie fans everywhere are breathing a collective sigh of relief, as Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige categorically states their upcoming reboot of ‘Spider-Man’ will not retell the character’s origins yet again.

Perhaps the biggest complaint about Sony’s earlier reboot ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ was how Marc Webb’s 2012 film chose to retell the character’s already familiar genesis tale only a decade after Sam Raimi’s original ‘Spider-Man.’

There were fears that this third take on the character might make the same mistake - but Feige has insisted this won’t happen. The Marvel boss has also confirmed that it will be Peter Parker, not the new comic book Spidey Miles Morales, who will appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Feige tells Crave Online, “In Spider-Man’s very specific case, where there have been two retellings of that origin in the last whatever it’s been – [thirteen] years – for us we are going to take it for granted that people know that, and the specifics.

“It will not be an origin story. But, with great power comes great responsibility. It is inherent to who his character is. But we want to reveal it in different ways and spend much more time focusing on this young high school kid in the MCU dealing with his powers.”

The producer added with a laugh, “There is a young kid [already] running around New York City in a homemade version of the Spider-Man costume in the MCU, you just don’t know it yet.”

It seemed to be every Marvel fan’s dream come true when, after months of rumours (many stemming from the Sony e-mail hack scandal), it was confirmed that Marvel and Sony had reached an agreement to share the character of Spider-Man, allowing arguably the most iconic Marvel superhero to finally appear side-by-side with The Avengers and co.

This new incarnation of Spidey will make his debut alongside Captain America, Iron Man and Black Panther in next year’s ‘Captain America: Civil War,’ before Kevin Feige and Sony’s Amy Pascal co-produce a 2017 solo movie.

Sony has come under fire from fans and critics following 2014′s overloaded and underwhelming ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2,’ but Feige still had some kind words to say for the studio’s five films with the character.

“I think they did a lot of things really, really right. In particular the look of Spider-Man, and the emotion of Spider-Man, and the women in his life.

“I think there are a lot of things they haven’t done, which is A) his interactions with other heroes in the universe, because that was not possible, and also exploring more the notion… [of] a much younger version of Spider-Man than we’ve seen in the movies. [The previous films] get him in and out of high school really fast.”

However, while casting of the new (and somewhat younger) Spidey remains unconfirmed, Feige does confess, “we’ve already designed the costume, which is different than any of the ones that have come before. And yet ours is classic Spidey, as I think you’ll see.”

‘Captain America: Civil War,’ is due 29 April 2016, followed by the as-yet untitled ‘Spider-Man’ solo movie on 28 July 2017.
