Matthew McConaughey: I’m Ready To Do Another Rom-Com (Exclusive)

Matthew McConaughey has admitted that he’s ready to return to the genre that made his name and mired his career in the past – the rom-com.

“Sure. Yeah, I could do [a rom-com]. It’ll be nice to do something light down the line. Whether that’d be a rom-com or just a straight balls out comedy, I don’t know, but yeah, it’s possible.”

Rewind the time by just five years and the idea of the serial rom-com star headlining an eagerly awaited $200m movie would seem ludicrous.

The 44-year-old star had become the punchline to a running joke thanks to a number of appearances in middling rom-coms like ‘Failure To Launch’, ‘How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days’, and ‘Ghosts of Girlfriends Past.’

But thanks to his tactical career realignment known as the ‘McConaissance’, he’s doing just that in Christopher Nolan’s ‘Interstellar’, which hits cinemas on Friday.

However, despite his climb to the top of Hollywood’s A-list, the actor tells us the ‘McConaissance’ isn’t over just yet.  In fact, it’s only just begun, and that his grand plan could even include a return to rom-coms in the near future. Watch the exclusive interview above.

“I don’t think [the McConaissance] is complete. I think I’m still in process and I look forward to staying in process,” he explains.

“None of this feels like a destination for me. As far as approaching my work, I’ve enjoyed the process more than ever, and thought less about the results, and ironically one could argue, I’ve got more results by thinking less about them.”

Talk of the ‘McConaissance’ began in the run up to the Oscar’s earlier this year thanks to a series of outstanding performances far removed from what we’ve previously seen from Texan before. McConaughey had been nominated for the Best Actor award thanks to his searing performance in ‘Dallas Buyers Club’ and he rightfully bagged the trophy on the big night.

He’d gone from middle-tier rom-com actor to one of the most highly sought after and respected thespians on the planets, in the space of six films.

He tells us one happy by-product afforded to him by winning the Oscar is that it has given him more power in Hollywood.

“I had a light shined on me for a while [because of the McConaissance]. They gave me some trophies for some work I did. So, perception-wise, as far as how I’m looked at from the outside, I’m getting more scripts to look at. I’m getting more choice, more power to say yes or no to things, which I appreciate.”

The next step for McConaughey’s renaissance is playing a suicidal man in Gus Van Sant’s ‘Sea of Trees’, so it seems that rom-com may have to wait.

‘Interstellar’ is in cinemas from Friday.
