Matthew Vaughn Praises The Fantastic Four Reboot

Matthew Vaughn has revealed that he is among the few to have seen 20th Century Fox’s upcoming reboot of ‘The Fantastic Four’ - and he has nothing but good things to say about it.

Dogged with controversy before it even began shooting, ‘The Fantastic Four’ has also been somewhat shrouded in mystery. Although it’s scheduled to hit cinemas this August, the studio have yet to release a single official image or snippet of footage from the film, from ‘Chronicle’ director Josh Trank.

However, ‘X-Men: First Class’ and ‘Kingsman: the Secret Service’ director Vaughn seems keen to assure us we have nothing to worry about - though as a producer on ‘The Fantastic Four,’ he’s hardly unbiased.

Vaughn tells Flickering Myth, “I’ve seen the movie, it’s good. I thought ‘Chronicle’ was a fantastic movie and [Josh] Trank has gone off and done his version of ‘Fantastic Four.’

"If you like ‘Chronicle,’ then you’ll like this. We’re all backing Josh Trank’s vision, and hopefully the world will like Josh Trank’s vision.”

These comments come days after an alleged Fox insider defended the film on Reddit (in posts which have since been deleted), insisting “it isn’t a complete trainwreck… it’s a genuinely good movie,” declaring that Fox “has no reason to be secretive,” and again likening it to Trank’s breakthrough film: “[it] feels like Chronicle 2.”

Nor are these comments the only ‘Fantastic Four’-related material to be deleted from the internet (such as this is possible). Alleged production images of The Thing, Dr Doom and most recently a possible logo for the film have popped up online only to be removed and/or debunked - and we’ve yet to see one photo of the cast together aside from this not especially flattering group selfie.

Many fans remain sceptical about ‘The Fantastic Four,’ thanks largely to the youth of the cast, and the casting of black actor Michael B Jordan as the traditionally white Johnny Storm. Reports of other significant deviations from the comics, including new back-stories for the central heroes and the villainous Doom, have not helped matters.

There has also been some controversy on the comics side. Marvel have recently cancelled ‘The Fantastic Four’ solo comic, which many have speculated is a deliberate effort to deprive Fox-owned properties of support. (We might note that Wolverine was also recently killed off, and it has recently been announced Deadpool will follow suit.)

Even so, Fox can’t be too lacking in confidence over the film, as a sequel is already scheduled for June 2017.

'The Fantastic Four' opens on 7 August 2015 - and while we will of course reserve judgement, we can't help suspecting it can only be better than Fox's two existing 'Fantastic Four' films from 2005 and 2007… remind yourself with the video below.
