Though it must be tough living in the shadow of your inordinately famous mum, actress Grace Gummer appears not to be trading on family currency in her burgeoning acting career.

Her first listed role was aged 7 in ‘The House of the Spirits’, playing the ‘young Clara’ alongside Vanessa Redgrave, Jeremy Irons, Glenn Close and Vincent Gallo – the actual role of the elder Clara was played by her mother.

Concentrating on education instead – she went to Vassar College, as did her mother – it wasn’t until 2010 that she embarked on her acting career proper.

Since then, she snared a role in the US TV series ‘Gigantic’, which, in a case of art imitating life, she played the daughter of Hollywood actors whose life is exposed in the tabloids (she co-starred with Gia Mantegna, the daughter of Joe Mantegna).

She also scooped roles in ‘Larry Crowne’ with Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts, and the celebrated indie ‘France Ha’, directed by Noah Baumbach.

Though she now follows her brother and sister into acting – Henry Wolfe Gummer and Mamie Gummer are also in the business – her forthcoming show, which starts in the US next week, could be another important career move.

Starring opposite Halle Berry, ‘Extant’ is being produced by Steven Spielberg and follows an intriguing set-up, with Berry’s astronaut Molly Woods returning after a year alone in space to find herself inexplicably pregnant.

“I never encouraged my children to do this job,” said Streep.

In which case, it must just be in the genes.
