Miles Teller Backtracks On Divergent 'Dead Inside' Comments

Miles Teller has attempted to backtrack on the remarks he made in a recent interview where he slated ‘Divergent’ and said making it made him feel ‘dead inside’.

The actor made what appeared to be a pretty unequivocal takedown of his experience on the film, in which he plays antagonist Peter Hayes, while talking about his latest film ‘Whiplash’, in which he plays a jazz drummer.

“When I first read ‘Whiplash,’ I was feeling dead inside,” he told W Magazine.

“I didn’t have an interesting part [in ‘Divergent’], and I’d taken the film for business reasons: It was the first movie I’d done that was going to have an international audience. I called my agent and said, ‘this sucks.’ He told me about ‘Whiplash’.”

Though this would seem to be rather a definite view on matters, he’s now said that he meant no ill will to the movie, and most of all, its fans.

First, his reps issued a statement, saying: “Accustomed to being more involved in the process of filmmaking, Miles regrets those words. He does value his relationship with Lionsgate and his participation in the franchise.”

Then he tweeted: “I’ve never done a movie for “business” reasons. I’m proud to be a part of Divergent franchise and love all of Peter’s Princesses.”

Now he has spoken to the LA Times, adding that he had made the remark in a response to a question asking him why he’d taken a smaller role in a movie after playing leads, and that the ‘business’ comment referred to playing a villain and the movie being an international franchise.

“Those were the ‘business reasons’ which every actor weighs; it’s not just the size of the part,” he said.

“And if I said ‘dead inside,’ I meant just burnt out and fatigued from doing my first big-budget lengthy shoot and four months was a long time and I just wanted to relax afterwards.”

He didn’t, however, seem to address the part where he mentioned that playing the part ‘sucked’.

Teller is set to appear in the second instalment of the YA franchise, ‘Insurgent’, next year.
