Movie Stars And Their Weird Hobbies

Movie stars are expected to live their lives on a different plane from the rest of us – and we’re not talking about the private jet that takes them to the shops when they need to buy milk. Glamour! Glitz! Solid gold rocket cars! The life of a Hollywood actor is supposed to be awesome and aspirational. Except, actually, most of the time, movie stars are just like you and I, which means several A-listers have weird little hobbies to keep them busy when they’re enjoying some downtime…

Dave Bautista collects lunchboxes

The ex-WWE superstar is set to be a household name after ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’ propelled him into the stratosphere, which makes his quaint hobby of collecting promotional lunchboxes all the more adorable. He started his obscure collection with an original 1982 ‘E.T.’ lunchbox. Says Dave: “I have some really good ones, a lot of old ones that are worth some money, but my favourite is the 1967 ‘Green Hornet’ lunchbox. It’s my favourite because Bruce Lee is on it.” Reminder: this man is capable of snapping you in half.

Kiefer Sutherland is a rodeo champ

In the wilderness years between ‘Flatliners’ and Jack Bauer, Kiefer chose to take time out of the limelight in 1998 to go and live on a ranch in Montana and learn a different skill-set. Having learned horse riding for movies like ‘Young Guns’, Sutherland learned his way around a lasso and entered – and won – several rodeo competitions. “Those two years on the ranch were my college years,” says Kiefer. “Three or four guys riding around in a truck from rodeo to rodeo. It was fantastic.”

Vin Diesel plays Dungeons & Dragons

It’s always the screen tough guys that end up being the biggest softies. When he’s not playing Iron Giants or snowboarding down mountains on tea trays or thrashing automobiles within an inch of their lives, Vin Diesel likes to kick back and roll the dice with a little D&D. Diesel is an avid Dungeon Master and has played IRL and online for years. He wrote a foreword for the book, ‘30 Years of Adventure: A Celebration of Dungeons & Dragons’ and when playing the lead in action movie ‘xXx’, had his D&D character name ‘Melkor’ fake-tattooed on his stomach. Not your average nerd.

Angelina Jolie collects knives and daggers

It seems odd these days, given that she’s an Oscar-nominated actress, philanthropist, adoptive mother and U.N. peacekeeper, but Angelina Jolie was a bit of a wild one in her youth. “My mom took me to buy my first daggers when I was 11 or 12,” says Jolie, who has admitted to press that she used blades during sex with partners (“You’re young, you’re drunk, you’re in bed, you have knives… s**t happens”). She has even bought her son, Maddox, some special daggers, which is a perfectly normal thing to do in Angelinaland.

Tom Cruise and Will Smith enjoy fencing

What do you get up to when you’re the world’s most famous actor? Fly a plane? Been there, done that. Scale the world’s tallest building and jump off? Yawn. When The Cruiser wants to keep fit, he gets together with his celebrity buddies Will Smith and David Beckham for a bout of fencing – that’s swordsplay, not the garden kind. Just imagine the look on the fencing instructor’s face when that trio walked in asking for lessons – we’re guessing the accumulative glare of the bodyguards meant no one dared thrust or parry anywhere near them.

Johnny Depp collects Barbie dolls

He’s a weird and quirky fellow, our Johnny, but we figured he’d be in the market for collecting pygmy skulls or something equally morbid. Not so. Depp is actually the proud owner of a vast collection of Barbie dolls, which he and his kids play with. Johnny is a fan of the limited edition models and reportedly owns models based on Beyoncé, the cast of ‘High School Musical’, Elvis and Audrey Hepburn (we’re assuming there are some Jack Sparrow toys on the shelf too). Depp even has a Lindsay Lohan Barbie, complete with ankle monitor – we’ll assume that one wasn’t an official Mattel product.

Tom Hanks collects antique typewriters

He’s one of the biggest stars in the world, but one thing Tom Hanks values above all else are his home comforts, and nothing is more comforting than his collection of typewriters. His love affair with the (type)written word began in the 70s when he bought a Hermes 2000 model, but he’s since expanded his collection considerably. “I’ve ended up sourcing them from every ridiculous source,” says Hanks. “Better to spend [my money] on $50 typewriters than some of the other things you can blow show-business money on.” He even launched an app – Hanx Writer – to compose digital letters using a typewriter interface. And you thought you couldn’t love him more.

Quentin Tarantino collects board games based on TV shows

Never one to let a kitsch pop culture trinket slip through his fingers, movie magpie Tarantino is obsessed not with guns or swords but board games – specifically those based on retro TV shows. Remember the episode of ‘CSI’ he directed where Greg and Hodges played the ‘Dukes Of Hazzard’ game? Totally makes sense now (well, not really, but you get what we mean). Who knows, maybe one day the filmmakers of tomorrow will get together for a quick game of ‘Reservoir Dogs: The Board Game’ – now with fake plastic ear!

Leonardo DiCaprio collects action figures

Tsk, boys and their toys. Of course, it’s different when that boy is a bona fide movie star – especially when there’s no shortage of supermodels who’d love to play with him. DiCaprio is a collector of vintage action figures and has been known to frequent toy fairs scouring for rare models. However, unlike most toy collectors, he was able to part with his collection – Leo raised $110,000 by auctioning off his most valuable figures for his own charity. (We bet he kept all the best ones for himself, mind).

Geena Davis is a keen archer

'Thelma & Louise' actress Geena Davis was on top of the world in the nineties as one of the foremost female actors in Hollywood – but all she really wanted to do was pick up her bow and arrow and arch. This was no passing craze: at her peak, Davis would practice archery for up to four hours a day, and she even attempted to qualify for the US Olympic team for the Sydney games in 2000, narrowly missing out on a place in the squad, pipped to the final bullseye by friend-turned-rival Susan Sarandon. Probably.
