Audiences have already had live action remakes of Cinderella, Aladdin, Lion King and more – and now, Disney is transforming the much-loved Mulan animation into a revised feature film, and the new trailer has just dropped.

It has big shoes to fill: the 1998 original was one of the highest-grossing films of the year, and critically acclaimed to boot.

Chinese actress Liu Yifei takes the titular role, which was voiced in the original by Ming-Na Wen, with the songs performed by Lea Salonga.

What is Mulan about?

Mulan is based on the Chinese legend of Hua Mulan.

After the Huns breach the Great Wall and invade Han China, the Emperor calls upon the men of the nation to join the Chinese army.

Mulan has concerns for her elderly father Fa Zhou, and disguises herself as a man in order to take his place.

As she's had no training, her fighting skills are lacking, and her trusted sidekick Mushu – the adorable dragon originally played by Eddie Murphy, who sadly won't appear in the live action remake – helps her improve her military skills.

Unlike the traditional legend, Disney's portrayal includes a romantic story line, as Mulan develops feelings for Captain Li Shang.

The live action remake sees another change, in that Li Shang will be replaced with the character of Chen Honghui, Mulan's rival who eventually begins to warm to the woman disguised as a man.

When is the Mulan live action remake released in the UK?

Disney's live action remake of Mulan is set to drop in UK cinemas on March 27 2020.
