Alien 5 Will IGNORE Last Two Sequels

Having had his ‘Alien’ film officially green lit, Neill Blomkamp has revealed that the next instalment will dismiss ‘Alien 3’ and ‘Alien: Resurrection’ in the timeline, making ‘Alien 5’ a direct continuation from James Cameron’s ‘Aliens’.

In a recent interview with Sky Movies, the ‘District 9’ director said, “I want this film to feel like it is literally the genetic sibling of ‘Aliens’.” It’s interesting to hear that the last two (the former helmed by a young David Fincher in 1992 and the latter by Jean-Pierre Jeunet in 1997) will be totally ignored in the series, as too will ‘Prometheus’, it seems.

"So it’s ‘Alien’, ‘Aliens’ and then this movie," Blomkamp states. The news will likely divide fans, angering those who are loyal to the franchise as a whole, and yes there are several who appreciate Fincher’s directorial debut, but mainly it’ll appease those who weren’t fond of the latter sequels.

It’s also strongly rumoured that Sigourney Weaver will be returning to the franchise in what’s being dubbed ‘Alien 5’. There must be something extremely appealing for Weaver to choose to return to the horror series after having only partaken in one ‘Alien’-related thing since 1997’s ill-fated ‘Alien: Resurrection’, which was to provide voice acting for the video game, ‘Alien: Isolation’.

In fact, the actress appeared suitably enthused at the prospect. ”I would love to take Ripley out orbiting around in space and give a proper finish to what was such an excellent story.”

As a fan of the franchise, I’m not only on board with Blomkamp’s involvement for the next one, but am very much in favour of scrapping the latter two movies because, like a lot of people out there, I wasn’t a fan either.

With the impressive concept art that litters Blomkamp’s Instagram, and now the news of a shifting ‘Alien’ chronology, and the addition of Weaver to the mix, it’s certainly an exciting prospect to look forward to over the coming years.
