New Star Wars: Episode 7 Images Allegedly Reveal Chrome Stormtroopers

Another day, another ‘Star Wars: Episode VII’ leak.

Indie Revolver, the entertainment blog responsible for those earlier leaked Stormtrooper photos, has posted two images which it claims show the new chrome Stormtroopers rumoured to be appearing in ‘Episode VII’.

The first of the two images shows an updated Stormtrooper’s head and shoulders, shrouded beneath a hood, but instead of the classic white armor, it’s polished chrome. The helmet is a much sleeker design than the one revealed last month, and the body armour appears to show raised neck guards on the its shoulders.

The blog post suggests the hood may not be a permanent part of the costume, rather something the actors wear on set to avoid being papped.

The second image is a piece of concept art, which they claim is by Doug Chiang, a visual effects designer who worked on ‘Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace’ and is rumoured to be doing it again for ‘Episode VII’. It seems legitimate, as it chimes with Chiang’s distinctive elongated style, and the background seems to match up with the Imperial-style wall lighting that JJ Abrams recently revealed on Twitter.

So, who, or what are the chrome Stormtroopers? Fan site MakingStarWars.net first suggested the presence of chrome Stormtroopers back in June, saying that these new-look troopers would work for a team of “Jedi Hunters” possibly headed up by Adam Driver and Lupita Nyong’o’s characters.

We know for a fact that Stormtroopers will appear in ‘Star Wars: Episode VII’, but for now, these chrome troopers remain unconfirmed. These wouldn’t be the first chrome troopers though, LEGO already beat them to it with this limited edition minifig released in 2010.

There’s something about these images and leaks that don’t quite ring true (why hasn’t Disney and Lucasfilm shut them down?), so until we see them for real in the first ‘Star Wars 7’ trailer, we’ll remain quietly skeptical.

‘Star Wars: Episode VII’ is coming to cinemas on 18 December, 2015.
