Terrifying Poltergeist Poster Unveiled

With the remake of the popular 80s classic ‘Poltergeist’ just around the corner, here’s a glimpse at the brand new, chilling poster that’s been released, with the hashtag #WhatAreYouAfraidOf attached.

Interestingly, it states that the film will indeed be a PG-13 in the US, which points towards  PG or (probably) 12a over here in the UK.

The poster, depicting the clown as seen in the 1982 Tobe Hooper movie, gives off a much more scary vibe than the audience rating suggests, with a sinister image of the child’s toy starring right through our souls…

With the trailer and now this poster implying that there are some scares to be had, it seems a PG certificate is too lenient for the BBFC to hand out. That said, it’s still surprising that the original horror flick, written by Steven Spielberg, was a kid-friendly film (having attained a PG-13 and PG rating), even though there are many unsuitable moments for the littleuns.

The 2015 reboot is directed by Gil Kenan (’Monster House’), and stars Sam Rockwell and Rosemarie DeWitt as the parents of the Bowen family at the centre of the new story.

Whether the trailer includes jump scares and scenes that will be cut for the UK version is unclear, but has a lot to live up to with its altered story perspective shifting from the mother’s (in the original) to that of the young boy in this one.

Considering how strict the BBFC are nowadays, it’d be quite something if they were to allow small children access to this. That said, 2012′s ‘The Woman in Black’ was awarded a 12a rating, even though there were a number of scares that would’ve no doubt reduced some children to tears. It’s also worth noting that this went on to become the highest-grossing British horror ever, which could have something to do with the decision to make it as available to all ages as possible.

‘Poltergeist’ is in UK cinemas on 22 May.
