Pan's Labyrinth Star Ivana Baquero: Then and Now

Few films stick with you in the way that Pan’s Labyrinth has.

Still director Guillermo Del Toro’s finest movie, the 2006 hit's success was thanks in no small measure to its child star, Ivana Baquero, who played the dreamer Ofelia.

Set in Spain after the civil war, during the right wing Falange movement, Ofelia escaped the oppression around her by retreating into a vivid – and often terrifying – fantasy world.

Consorting with a fairy and a faun, she embarks on a series of tasks in order to be granted immortality.

Catalan star Baquero was 11 at the time, winning the role over 1,000 others who went for the part.

Del Toro thought she was so good, he changed the role for her - it was originally meant to be played by an eight-year-old.

A superb performance, she took home the Goya Award in 2006 – the leading Spanish movie accolade – for Best New Actor, while the movie won three Oscars (for art direction, cinematography and make-up).

After her breakthrough movie role, she went on to star in ‘The New Daughter’ with Kevin Costner, and the thriller ‘Another Me’, alongside ‘Game of Thrones’ star Sophie Turner.
