The horrifying true story of Colleen Stan sits at the centre of two of the big releases on Paramount+ UK this month, with a fictionalised movie about the case — entitled Girl in the Box — accompanied by a two-part documentary about the harrowing real events.

Elsewhere, Jon Bernthal steps into Richard Gere's shoes for a reworked take on American Gigolo and Eva Longoria leads the cast of couple-in-crisis romcom Unplugging.

There's also Jonathan Rhys Meyers thriller The Survivalist, which takes place in a rather bleak version of a post-COVID world.

New movies coming to Paramount+ UK in September 2022

The Survivalist (2 September)

While those of us in the real world are very grateful for the arrival of the various COVID-19 vaccines, the characters in thriller The Survivalist didn't have the same success. The movie unfolds in a world utterly torn apart by the Delta variant — it went into production at the end of 2020 — and follows an FBI agent (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) as he attempts to protect a young girl with possible immunity to the disease from the hunters chasing her down.

The actor playing the leader of the hunters? Oscar nominee and Hollywood legend John Malkovich.

Unplugging (16 September)

In this romcom, Eva Longoria and Matt Walsh play a couple who believe that a getaway far from phone signal and social media could be the answer to their woes. Needless to say, things don't quite go as plan for the couple, but this raises the possibility that turmoil could bring them closer. The cast also includes Keith David and Back to the Future star Lea Thompson.

Girl in the Box (19 September)

In 1977, Colleen Stan got into the wrong car while hitch-hiking and was subsequently imprisoned and subjected to horrible torture for several years. Addison Timlin plays Stan in this feature-length dramatisation of one of America's most shocking crimes, with Zane Holtz and Zelda Williams as the couple behind her captivity.

Given that this case also inspired the notorious 2007 horror The Poughkeepsie Tapes, it's fair to say that viewers are in for a dark ride.
