Ghostbusters director Paul Feig has confronted Sony Pictures about his all-female instalment's omission from the new 'Ultimate Collection' boxset.

Released five years ago, the reboot starred comedy favourites Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon as a new band of Ghostbusters, but it was met with divided responses before bombing at the box office.

Speaking on Twitter yesterday (December 22), Feig retweeted a SlashFilm article highlighting the studio's decision to leave his movie out of the eight-disc gift set, which also includes the book Making Ghostbusters.

"Um ... @SonyPictures, I know this must be a mistake," he wrote. "We do have a lot of fans and Bill [Murray], Dan [Aykroyd] and Ernie [Hudson] were in it and it won the Kids' Choice Award for Best Feature Film the year it came out.

"So, I guess this was just an oversight? #weareallghostbusters."

This was echoed by filmmaker BJ Colangelo, who tweeted: "I genuinely hate the exclusion of 2016 from this set. I keep seeing people argue quality or canon but could you imagine if someone did a Halloween box set and left out the ones people think are 'bad' or change canon?

"This is so disrespectful."

On the flip side, one Ghostbusters fan felt this omission was wholly justified, replying to Feig: "Afterlife was a concluding part of a trilogy. Set in the same universe. Your film chose to ignore that. Shut out the fans of the originals. Putting it in a different existence. It's not canon.

"You may have had Bill, Dan and Ernie. But they weren't playing the characters we loved."
