Paul Thomas Anderson Defends The Superhero Genre

Paul Thomas Anderson has come out in defence of the superhero genre, admitting that he loves to watch the likes of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ and ‘Man Of Steel’.

The lauded filmmaker made his remarks while talking with Rolling Stone, and he even went on to state that he isn’t sure why superhero movies have a bad reputation.

“I can’t remember a year in recent memory where there were less complaints about the quality of movies. And what’s wrong with superhero movies, you know? I don’t know. You’re talking to someone that enjoys watching those films.”

Anderson even had some advice for moviegoers who do criticise these films: “People need to get a life if they’re having that discussion. Those movies get a bad rap.”

Paul Thomas Anderson made these remarks while promoting ‘Inherent Vice’, the latest film of his to have received universal acclaim following ‘The Master’, ‘There Will Be Blood’, ‘Punch Drunk Love’, ‘Magnolia’ and ‘Boogie Nights’.

Anderson has worked alongside several actors who have popped up in superhero films. ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’s’ Benicio del Toro and Josh Brolin each star in ‘Inherent Vice’, while John C Reilly, Alfred Molina, Gwyneth Paltrow, Samuel L Jackson, Don Cheadle and Amy Adams have each featured in Anderson’s films too.

This isn’t the first time that Anderson has come out in support of mainstream Hollywood cinema. He previously admitted that he dropped out of NYU film school after just two days because his teacher chastised ‘Terminator 2: Judgment Day.’

Does this mean that Paul Thomas Anderson might one day direct a superhero movie? We can only dream. ‘Inherent Vice’ will be released in the UK on 30 January.
