Pete Docter Reveals More Details On Pixar's Inside Out

'Inside Out' director Pete Docter spoke this week about Pixar's latest animated movie, revealing his inspiration and new characters that'll feature.

During a Q and A hosted by the @PixarInsideOut Twitter account, Docter was on hand to validate and explain the choices behind the film’s characters.

In response to the emotion he had most fun creating, he jovially responded, “Anger. Wait, what does that say about me? Actually it’s likely because Lewis Black was so great for the role.”

He describes how they “did lots of research & talked to psychologists to find what emotions science has identified,” but they narrowed it down to five that make up the characters we see inside Riley’s mind.

We already know that Docter based the story on his own daughter and real-life experiences, but reiterated his inspirations; “For Riley we looked at our daughters & their friends. People think we make this stuff up. Most is real life!”

The challenges of constructing the ‘Inside Out’ world was tough, because it was completely made up and “unlike anything you’ve ever seen before.” He cites how it was more difficult than, say, doing research for ‘Toy Story’ in toy shops, ‘Monsters University’ around a university institute, or ‘Brave’ by visiting Scotland.

Interestingly, he reveals that Joy is the film’s main character: “Joy is our lead. But the film has 2 stories that interrelate, and each affects the other (another challenge).” So presumably Joy will take the reins internally, with Riley is the focus on the outside. The ‘Up’ director explained his reasoning; “basically joy is the reason we take risks and try new things,”so hones in on her as a driving force for the narrative.

When asked about his favourite character in the film, Docter let’s slip on some exciting, unseen faces that’ll appear; “There are some awesome characters in Subconscious and Dream Production you haven’t seen yet… just wait!”

While the Q and A was brief, it did nonetheless offer some insight into some previously unexplored aspects of the film.

'Inside Out' is in UK cinemas 24 July, 2015.
