Production Begins On Pirates of the Caribbean 5, Javier Bardem Confirmed As Villain

It’s once more unto the salty seas, as news arrives that the fifth movie in the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ series, suffixed ‘Dead Men Tell No Tales’, has launched itself into production.

The movie is shootingon Australia’s stunning Gold Coast in Queensland, with Johnny Depp reprising his role of the slurring reprobate Captain Jack Sparrow.

This time around, he’ll be facing off against a new villain, thus far unnamed but played by ‘Skyfall’ star Javier Bardem, who’s now officially confirmed.

Bardem is joined by Golshifteh Farahani of ‘Exodus: Gods and Kings’ fame, and young pair Kaya Scodelario (‘The Maze Runner’) and Brenton Thwaites (‘Maleficent’).

Reprising roles are Geoffrey Rush as Barbossa, Kevin R. McNally as Joshamee Gibbs and Stephen Graham as Scrum.

Direction comes from Norwegian pairing Espen Sandberg & Joachim Rønning, the helmsmen behind the acclaimed ‘Kon-Tiki’.

The official synopsis goes like this:

“Thrust into an all-new adventure, a down-on-his-luck Captain Jack Sparrow finds the winds of ill-fortune blowing even more strongly when deadly ghost pirates led by his old nemesis, the terrifying Captain Salazar (Bardem), escape from the Devil’s Triangle, determined to kill every pirate at sea…including him. Captain Jack’s only hope of survival lies in seeking out the legendary Trident of Poseidon, a powerful artefact that bestows upon its possessor total control over the seas.”

The release date is set for July 7, 2017.
