Ricky Gervais Has A Travolta Moment Trying To Pronounce Quvenzhane Wallis At The Golden Globes

He claimed to have practiced pronouncing it, but despite his preparation, Ricky Gervais still managed to pronounce Quvenzhane Wallis’s name wrongly at the Golden Globes.

Pitching up on to the stage at last night’s prize-giving, Gervais was tasked with giving out the gong for Best Actress in a Comedy of Musical.

The first lot were easy enough, with Amy Adams, Emily Blunt, Helen Mirren and Julianne Moore up for the gong.

But when he got to ‘Annie’ star Quvenzhane Wallis, he fluffed it, sounding more like ‘Kwevin-johnny Wallis’.

To add additional embarrassment, he then went on to make a point of how he’d studied how to pronounce the name, to avoid a moment like John Travolta’s at the Oscars last year, reckoning he’d ‘got away with it’.

Travolta infamously flubbed Idina Menzel into ‘Adele Dazeem’.

Trying to style it out, Gervais continued to blether on about Travolta’s bizarre blooper, but it didn’t quite mitigate his own blunder.

With a glass of beer in hand, Gervais also referred to his past tenure as host of the show, during which he became known for his close-to-the-bone gags.

“Going well, isn’t it? Let’s not ruin it. By me saying anything, really,” he said.

“No one wants to see me insult any of you rich, beautiful, overprivileged celebrities. so no ordinary people at home wants to see that because you’re better than ordinary people, because you know it and they know it deep down, so I’m not gonna start picking on things you’ve done, some of it immoral, a lot of it illegal.

“But if we’ve learned one thing, it’s that famous people are above the law. As it should be. So Ip’m not gonna talk about all the terrible things you’ve done to get here tonight. Streep and Clooney. I’m not even looking at Katie Holmes.”

Gervais was later spotted partying with ‘Arrested Development’ star Will Arnett at one of the post-event after-parties.

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler have taken over the hosting duties for the past two years, after Gervais’s performances seemed to fall out of favour, notably with the critics.
