Robert Downey Jr On Iron Man's Relationship With Captain America

The relationship between Iron Man and Captain America has always been the most important in the Avengers. The two figureheads - one an iconic war hero, the other an egomaniac not partial to taking orders - were always destined to butt heads.

We saw that butting of heads in 2012′s ‘Avengers Assemble’ and sequel ‘Age of Ultron’ will further test and strain their relationship to breaking point. Once broken, they will come to blows in next year’s ‘Captain America: Civil War’.

With a lot of focus being given to the two characters ahead of that film, Iron Man himself Robert Downey Jr was asked by the Times of India to explain how the pair work.

“There are really only two relationships in Tony [Stark]’s life in which he’s been willing to assume a lower status and one’s with Pepper obviously, equal footing, and the other is with Cap [Chris Evans].

“It’s always whoever does the job best should probably do that job and Tony’s bringing a lot to the table and Cap has the most experience. It’s also nice to feel like there’s someone under whose tutelage you become better at what you have to do and no one’s more battle-seasoned than Cap.”

Of course Downey Jr keeps his words strictly in relation to what we’ll see in ‘Age of Ultron’ but it’s an interesting take, clearly meant to evoke Stark’s deep respect for Cap.

Stark’s father Howard [portrayed on screen by Dominic Cooper and Jon Slattery] worked with Captain America and respected the man also. It’s no leap to assume he told a young Tony stories of Captain America during his childhood.

Tony will do well to remember those tales in ‘Civil War’, when an ideological battle between the two turns into a physical one. How they get there though, that’ll be seen in ‘Age of Ultron’

‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ is out on 23 April.
