Robert Downey Jr Says Captain America 3 Is ‘Gonna Be Huge’ (Exclusive)

Robert Downey Jr. has broken the silence surrounding rumours that Tony Stark is due to play a key role in ‘Captain America 3’, telling us the film is “gonna be huge” while promoting his new film ‘The Judge’.

Watch our exclusive interview above.

While neither exactly confirming or denying the rumours, the actor says ‘Captain America 3’ sounds “very exciting”. He adds that if he were to comment directly on the rumors he’d “just regret it”, hinting at the legendarily draconian NDAs (Non-Disclosure Agreements) the key actors are said to be bound by.

The actor has been asked a lot about the future of Iron Man over the last few months, first telling Variety there were no plans for ‘Iron Man 4’, before explaining to David Letterman “I’m going to do other stuff with Marvel. I’m still going to be involved with Marvel and there’s gonna be plenty of fun stuff to happen.”

Last week Variety finally broke the news of that “other stuff” which said that Robert Downey Jr. was “on the verge” of joining the cast of 2016’s ‘Captain America 3’ in a “key role”, however this has yet to be confirmed by Marvel Studios or Downey Jr’s representatives.

The rumors suggest Tony Stark would be an antagonist of sorts in ‘Cap 3’, butting heads with Chris Evans’ Captain America, in what Variety suggests would be the first step of a larger Marvel Cinematic Universe plot known as Civil War.

Civil War, which is based on a famous comic arc, would see the Avengers torn down the middle as they feud over the Superhero Registration Act, a piece of government legislation that requires all super-powered beings to report to the government and act as a “police force for the authorities”.

Having two key Avengers in one film would make ‘Captain America 3’ a huge event movie for 2016, so perhaps this is the reason that Warner Bros. backed down from the original release date for ‘Batman v Superman’ which was due to be released on the same day.

Either way, both films are undoubtedly going to be huge, marking 2016 as a bumper movie year to look forward to.

'Captain America 3' (or 'Captain America v Iron Man' if you like) is coming to cinemas on 6 May, 2016 while 'Batman v Superman' will arrive on 25 March.

Before that though, we’ll see Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark in ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ when it comes to cinemas next year.
