Robert Downey Jr. is in final talks to join ‘Captain America 3’, in a move that is set to drastically alter the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Downey Jr. will play Iron Man in the hugely-anticipated follow-up to ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier,’ and it’s also believed that this will kick-start a storyline that will revolve around the Civil War comic-book series.

Variety were the first to report the huge decision, and it comes after Downey Jr teased that he would portray Tony Stark in a number of different Marvel films. However it’s still believed that this won’t include the previously touted fourth instalment to ‘Iron Man’ franchise.

Of course, Downey Jr. has achieved huge success in the previous Marvel solo films that he has appeared in. 2008’s ‘Iron Man’, and its two follow-ups have grossed close to $2.5 billion across the world, while Downey was only believed to be signed up for two more films with his existing Marvel deal, which will see him star in ‘Avengers: Age Of Ultron’, due in 2015, and ‘Avengers 3’, which is expected in 2018.

It has been reported that ‘Captain America 3’s’ plot will see Stark go up against Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers. Variety wrote that the pair will “feud over the Superhero Registration Act, which forces anyone with superhuman abilities to reveal their identities to the U.S. government and agree to act as a police force the authorities.”

Stark is adamant that the program is necessary, while Rogers believes that it threatens civil liberties. Rogers is then forced to go on the run to avoid arrest, and Downey Jr will chase him and basically be playing a villain in the blockbuster.

However, the crossover almost didn’t happen. Downey Jr wanted to have a bigger role than the smaller part that originally had been written for him. He asked for the script to be changed so that his role was more substantial, and this also meant that he’d be paid more too. Rather than being overjoyed with Downey’s desire, Marvel Entertainment chief, Ike Perlmutter, instead asked for Iron Man to be written out of the script, but Marvel Studios president, Kevin Feige, then intervened to help make the collaboration happen.

Iron Man’s inclusion in ‘Captain America 3’ is set to drive Marvel’s upcoming plots and films over the next few movies, and its repercussions will be felt in ‘Avengers 4’, ‘Ant-Man’ and ‘Doctor Strange’ too. Either way, Marvel appear to have stepped up their game in order to compete against ‘Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice’, and Downey Jr’s addition certainly makes ‘Captain America 3’ more alluring.
