Roberto Orci Won’t Write Star Trek 3

Although Roberto Orci won’t be directing the upcoming ‘Star Trek 3’ many assumed he would pen the screenplay… but the man himself admits that he won’t be writing the sequel.

It’s been a tough couple of weeks for Roberto Orci. He may have penned both ‘Star Trek’ and ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ with his long-time writing partner Alex Kurtzman, but it looks as though a deal to direct the upcoming sequel has fallen through. And while we all thought that he’d at least return to pen ‘Star Trek 3’ it looks as though Paramount Pictures has other ideas…

Heading over to the Trek Movie messaging boards, the ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ writer revealed that he won’t be writing the upcoming sequel… even though we all assumed it was a done deal.

“I’m producing,” he said. “Nothing more or less.”

Of course, this is quite a difference, considering that he was hotly tipped to take over from J.J. Abrams at the helm of ‘Star Trek 3’. But it seems it just wasn’t meant to be… and the job eventually went to ‘Fast & Furious 6’ director, Justin Lin.

And from what I hear, it has a lot to do with Orci’s direction for the upcoming sequel.

It’s rumoured that following Orci’s first pass at the ‘Trek 3’ script, Paramount Pictures weren’t exactly on board with his ideas. And they can’t have been good, seeing as the studio has seemingly decided to replace him with other (currently unknown) writers and give the director’s job to somebody else.

Still, this is Roberto Orci we’re talking about… and following suggestions on the Trek Movie boards about the plotline for the ‘Star Trek’ sequel, he’s taken the opportunity to (once more) bash the fans.

“Stop blaming [Bad Robot],” he said following negative reaction to the rebooted ‘Star Trek’ universe. “It was my idea so that you would not know what was gonna happen next. Nothing more or less. I stand behind it. And it, again, is the reason why I make movies and you don’t.”

Of course, this isn’t the first time Orci has thrown his weight around when it comes to the fans… but after losing out on both writing and directing gigs, you’d think he’d perhaps show a little more humility.

After all, people in glass houses…

But will Orci eventually return to pen subsequent instalments of the ‘Star Trek’ franchise? I have to wonder whether there’s a bigger reason why Roberto Orci has lost out on both jobs. And I can’t help thinking that perhaps he’s burned his bridges when it comes to ‘Star Trek’.

But for now, we’ll have to wait and see.

‘Star Trek 3’ is heading to cinemas on 8 July 2016.
