Robin Williams Honoured With Singalong By Aladdin Broadway Cast

The Broadway theatre showing the stage version of Disney’s Aladdin united in a sing-a-long on Tuesday to honour Robin Williams, who died this week.

Williams played the part of the Genie in the 1992 movie and the rendition of ‘Friend Like Me’ was led by his stage counterpart James Monroe Iglehart.

The audience was provided with the song lyrics in their playbills and they joined in heartily after Iglehart started things off.

‘Aladdin’ has been a success in New York, with Iglehart winning a Tony Award for his portrayal of the magical wish-giver.

“He’s a husband and father first, entertainer second,” Iglehart told the packed auditorium.

The sing-a-long ended with the actor pointing at the sky and the crowd giving a standing ovation.

The lights on Broadway’s marquees were dimmed last night, as is tradition, to recognize the theatrical contribution of the actor.

The star performed in ‘Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo’ in 2011, as well as appearing in ‘Waiting For Godot’ alongside Steve Martin during the Eighties.

Williams took his own life this week at the age of 63 following a battle with depression.
