Robin Williams's Son Zak Gives First Interview Since His Father's Death

Robin Williams took his own life four months ago, but while he’s gone, he’s hardly been forgotten. With Robin’s final movie, Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb, opening this Friday, both the world and his family are remembering the comedy icon. Williams left behind three children, and now Zak, Robin’s son with Valerie Velardi, is giving his first interview since his father’s tragic death.

"I miss him all the time," Zak lamented to People. “Often I see something or if I’m watching a film, I think, ‘Oh man, he would have appreciated this’ or ‘He would have gotten a laugh out of this.’ …Taking time when I feel overwhelmed is key, stepping aside and taking a moment to breathe.”

Ultimately, Zak is trying to look on the bright side. “He was a great father, but also a great friend. You don’t always have that in a parent.”

The star’s son spoke for the first time publicly at the annual Dana & Christopher Reeve Foundation benefit, where Robin’s work with the organization, as well as his friendship with the Superman actor, was honored. “We’re experiencing the new normal,” he said at the time. “Healing is a long-term process.”

The 31-year-old also spoke to People on behalf of his younger siblings, 25-year-old Zelda and 23-year-old Cody, revealing, “There’s not a day goes by that we don’t think about our dad. The key thing is just to take things a step at a time. I know it sounds a little clichéd, but really focusing on what’s in front of you, focusing on your well-being and then trying to fill our hearts so we can be there for others is really important.”

Indeed, in early October, Zelda revealed that she had gotten a new tattoo in honor of her late father. Her tribute featured a small hummingbird near her thumb along with Robin’s birthdate along her wrist.

"For poppo. Thank you to the incomparable @dr_woo_scc for so beautifully bringing my reminders to life. I’ll always put my hand out to shake with a smile," she wrote alongside the black-and-white snap.

Zak isn’t just speaking about his father’s passing; however, like his sister, he’s taking actions to honor his father’s memory as well. Zak has followed in Robin’s charitable footsteps and found that giving back to others has been a great comfort to himself. But while the comedian devoted his time to sick children by volunteering for the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Zak is tackling new ground — at a local prison.

"It’s through helping others that I’ve begun to heal," Zak shared.

We’re sure this would bring a smile to his father’s face.
