Rumour: Key Avengers May Not Appear In Avengers 3?

Following on from rumours that the third ‘Avengers’ movie may be split in two, a new report suggests Marvel Studios might have something different – and even bigger – in the pipeline.

The excitement was palpable last week when reports circulated that Marvel may have plans to make a two-volume epic (much in the style of the last ‘Harry Potter’ and ‘Twilight’ movies, and the upcoming ‘Hunger Games: Mockingjay’) as the follow-up to next summer’s ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron.’

However, scepticism was also rife, as making two more ‘Avengers’ movies would take some of the key players – notably Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans – beyond their contracted number of appearances.

While signing the stars up for another go around isn’t necessarily out of the question, it would be very costly for Marvel – making it a rather unlikely course of action.

However, Devin Faraci of Badass Digest has reportedly been “doing some digging on this rumor,” and “discovered it was closer to truth than I ever imagined.

“Marvel isn’t spltting ‘Avengers 3’ into two movies, but they are planning ‘Avengers 3’as the springboard to… something else. And they’re going to use their biggest characters in that something else, keeping them out of ‘Avengers 3.’”

Faraci notes that “Robert Downey Jr’s renegotiated contract seems to specify ‘Avengers 3’ as his next film,” which presumably means that will be the last appearance of Downey as Iron Man.

But Chris Hemworth’s Thor, Chris Evans’ Captain America and possibly Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow may skip this particular film altogether, coming back instead on the ultra-huge movie that everything is building toward.

As regards that lesser-seen Avenger, Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk – Faraci tantalisingly suggests that “Hulk’s planet of residence could well be up in the air by 2018 or so.”

This is a clearly suggestion that the celebrated ‘Planet Hulk’ and/or ‘World War Hulk’ storyline may indeed be lined up for big screen adaptation, as has long been rumoured - and widely denied by Marvel insiders.

As to who, then, will appear in the third ‘Avengers’ alongside Iron Man:  Faraci suggests “the secondary characters from the MCU” may take centre stage, presumably meaning the likes of Rhodey/Iron Patriot (Don Cheadle), ‘Captain America: the Winter Soldier’s Falcon (Anthony Mackie) and Agent 13 (Emily VanCamp).

‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’s new additions Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and Quicksilver (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) would seem a shoe-in as well.

There’s also the question of when the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ will join their earth-bound compatriots; on top of which, by ‘Avengers 3’ we will also have Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man and an as-yet uncast Doctor Strange – and, who knows, perhaps a Black Panther and/or Captain Marvel?

Faraci also suggests (though he emphasises this is 100% pure speculation) that, just possibly, even the characters from Marvel TV – the ‘Agents of SHIELD,’ and the heroes of the upcoming Netflix ‘The Defenders’ shows – could also be brought into the fold, meaning that this post-‘Avengers 3’ mega-movie would bring together all corners of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Still - with no official word on the matter from Marvel themselves (and we probably shouldn’t expect them to spill the beans anytime soon), this is something to be taken with a big pinch of salt for now.

But even so, there’s no denying that in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, these guys certainly don’t tend to think small…
