Ryan Reynolds On Deadpool Budget & Rating

Ryan Reynolds has spoken about his hopes for the upcoming ‘Deadpool’ - including the possibility of an R-rating.

The Canadian actor debuted the role in the much maligned ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine,’ yet despite that earlier take on Marvel’s ‘merc with a mouth’ being badly received, Reynolds has remained attached to the solo movie through five years of development hell.

Now, after the test footage released online last year sparked huge buzz, ‘Deadpool’ is finally set to start production next month - and Reynolds promises something that will stand apart from other superhero movies.

Speaking to Collider, Reynolds praises director Tim Miller - an experienced FX artist who will make his directorial debut on ‘Deadpool’ - as “the right guy” for the job:

"He’s always, you know, shown nothing but a fierce loyalty to the canon of Deadpool and that’s the thing you look for first and foremost, a guy that is always wanting to push a little bit farther.

"And the advantage of doing a movie like this on a budget that is significantly less than any other kind of superhero movie is that you get to do things that you don’t get to do on other superhero movies so that’s what we’re most excited about.”

It has long been suggested that ‘Deadpool’ would be produced on a somewhat lower budget than tends to be the norm for superhero movies - and, as such, that 20th Century Fox might be comfortable with the filmmakers aiming for a more mature film than the usual PG-13/12A superhero format.

Whilst understandably reticent to say anything too definitive on that question, Reynolds seems to hint this is what they have in mind: “I have no idea … I don’t want to spoil anything so we’ll see. We hope.”

The US R-rating means no admittance to children under the age of 17 unless accompanied by a parent or guardian. Most R-rated films tend to get either a 15 or 18 rating in the UK.

There have been R-rated Marvel movies, notably the ‘Blade’ films (which arguably kick-started the modern comic book movie wave in the first place) and ‘The Punisher’ films, but as the rating tends to mean smaller profits the studios have tended to avoid them.

However, as one of the less kid-friendly characters of the Marvel universe whose comics contain graphic violence and mature content, it has long been suggested that the ‘Deadpool’ movie would be aiming for an R - and that this was a key factor in Fox not giving the film a green light for such a long time.

Whether the situation has changed remains to be seen - but whatever it ends up getting rated, ‘Deadpool’ is scheduled to hit cinemas in just over a year’s time, on 12 February 2016.
