Ryan Reynolds Thanks Fans As Deadpool Wraps

Looks like principal photography on the eagerly anticipated ‘Deadpool’ is now complete - and Ryan Reynolds, as has become the norm, has marked the occasion on social media.

Taking to Twitter, the actor shared an image of a wall marked ‘Deadpool was here,’ along with the message “ #Deadpool has been a privilege to make. And we got to make this film because of you. Gonna eat a samich now. #wrapped”

Yes, it’s a familiar tune now, but it does seem fair to hold up ‘Deadpool’ as a genuine example of a movie getting made thanks to fan demand. The film had been in the works since Reynolds first played the role of Wade Wilson in 2009′s much-maligned ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine,’ and for some time looked unlikely to get the green light from 20th Century Fox.

So many factors were working against it: the misuse of the character in his first screen appearance; Reynolds’ own chequered past in comic book movies, notably the flops ‘Green Lantern’ and ‘RIPD;’ an untested director in Tim Miller; and a treatment of a Marvel character which required a rating higher than 12A/PG-13.

However, after the now near-legendary test footage was released online last year, the fan reaction was hugely enthusiastic - and so 20th Century Fox at last gave the film the go-ahead, shelving a planned ‘X-Force’ movie in the process.

And the icing on the cake: on April Fool’s Day, it was confirmed that the film will indeed be R-rated - the first Marvel film produced by 20th Century Fox as part of the X-Men universe to be granted a restrictive rating.

We’ll find out if the wait was worth it on 16 February 2016 (and in the meantime, we’ll no doubt be waiting on tenterhooks for the first trailer…)
