’13 Little Blue Envelopes’ Movie In The Mail With Alloy & New Line

Alloy Entertainment has landed rights to Maureen Johnson’s bestseller 13 Little Blue Envelopes and will develop the YA novel as a feature film with corporate sibling New Line Cinema. Black List scribe Harper Dill (Friend Of Bill) has been tapped to adapt the book, originally published in 2006 by HarperCollins. A sequel was published in 2014.

The story centered on high schooler Ginny, who receives 13 blue envelopes from a mysterious aunt who has since died and strict rules to follow in opening them. The instructions lead her on a trek to Europe, with Ginny opening the next envelope after the task set out in the previous one has been completed. Eventually, with the help of folks she meets along the way, she completes her pot-at-the-end-of-the-rainbow journey.

New Line’s Richard Brener and Andrea Johnston are overseeing the project for the studio. Les Morgenstein and Elysa Dutton of Alloy Entertainment Features are producing.

Johnson was a co-writer on 2008’s three-pronged Let It Snow book with Lauren Myracle and Fault In Our Stars author John Green, teaming three A-list YA scribes. Dill’s comedy Friend Of Bill is being produced by Gary Sanchez with Lizzy Caplan attached. She is repped by WME, Blackbox Management and Jackoway Tyerman.
