Disappointing... Arnie's film flops (Credit: Lionsgate)
‘The Last Stand’ sees the ‘Terminator’ star play an ageing sheriff trying to halt an escaping drug baron and co-stars Johnny Knoxville. It took £539,000 from 356 cinemas nationwide - averaging just £1,514 from each screen.
To contrast, ‘Les Miserables’ made £4 million, despite being in its third week of release.
Regardless of a colossal publicity campaign the Austrian born action star’s movie has also flopped in the US - making just £4.6 million in opening weekend and again only just sneaking into the top ten.
‘The Last Stand’ was pitched as Schwarzenegger’s comeback movie after a decade in politics and two terms as the ‘Governator’ of California. Although the 65 year-old had recently made some cameo appearances, including in Sylvester Stallone’s ‘The Expendables’, his last major movie was sci-fi series reboot ‘Terminator 3: Rise Of The Machines’, back in 2003.
The Austrian Oak still has a few more rounds in the chamber with upcoming flicks ‘Ten’ and Sly Stallone co-starer ‘The Tomb’ – but it looks like Schwarzenegger’s ‘The Last Stand’ wasn’t as heroic as it sounded.
