Carrie Fisher confirms return to Star Wars?

When it comes to casting rumours, 'Star Wars: Episode VII' has already seen its fair share. We've heard rumours that Harrison Ford will return as Han Solo and that Mark Hamill could be back as an ageing Jedi master… but sadly, nothing official. Mark Hamill has been quick to quash casting rumours and Harrison Ford has been nowhere to be seen. And while a number of 'Star Wars' actors have expressed an interest in returning, none have confirmed their appearance… until now.

In a Q&A with Palm Beach Illustrated, Carrie Fisher 'confirms' that she will return in 'Star Wars: Episode VII'.

Disney is going to continue the 'Star Wars' saga, producing movies set to hit theatres starting in 2015. Can you confirm whether you'll reprise the role of Princess Leia?

"Yes."

I know what you're thinking - it's not exactly 'War and Peace'. But with 'Episode VII' still in the beginning stages, it's entirely reasonable that she can't say too much. But that's exactly the problem… while this is undoubtedly incredible news, I can't help feeling that it could be just a bit premature. Sources at Lucasfilm explain that there's nothing official yet regarding casting and in a recent interview, Mark Hamill revealed that "I can tell you right away that we haven't signed any contracts." So while the enthusiasm is definitely there, it seems that things might not be as certain as everyone hopes.

Still, you can't blame her for getting carried away. It's been almost thirty years since she hung up that gold bikini and the fans are keen to see their favourite intergalactic princess return to the silver screen. But will she be the same princess that we know and love? Carrie goes on to explain how Princess Leia might have changed since the last time we saw her.

What do you think Princess Leia is like today?

"Elderly. She's in an intergalactic old folks' home [laughs]. I just think she would be just like she was before, only slower and less inclined to be up for the big battle."

And still wearing the bagel buns?

"The bagel buns and the bikini, because probably she has sundowners syndrome. At sundown, she thinks that she's 20-something. And she puts it on and gets institutionalized."

Joking aside, I think it's brilliant that Carrie Fisher understands that she can't go dashing around dodging blaster fire anymore. While it's great to think that the old gang might get back together for 'Episode VII', everyone has their limits - nobody needs to see Luke Skywalker swinging that lightsaber around while mumbling about a dodgy hip. Thankfully, Carrie's quips suggest a more mature take on our favourite rebel princess… but will the rest of the cast remember that it really was a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away?

Do you think bringing back the original actors is a good idea? Will Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford make their 'Star Wars' comeback?
